A Pre-Tour Concert before the Idaho International Choral Festival

What does it mean to belong?

For many of us, home is more than a place—it can be a language, a memory, a landscape, or the people with whom we share our lives.

As a Chinese-language choir based in Utah, Salt Lake Chinese Choir has often reflected on what it means to preserve cultural identity while building a life in a new place. Standing Somewhere explores that question through contemporary Chinese-language choral music.

Presented before the choir's appearance at the Idaho International Choral Festival, this program journeys from the grasslands of Mongolia to the waterways of Jiangnan, weaving together themes of migration, memory, longing, and belonging. Featuring piano, erhu, Chinese flute, percussion, and traditional dance, the concert brings together diverse artistic traditions to create an experience that speaks across cultures.

More than a pre-tour concert, Standing Somewhere is an invitation to reflect on the places that shape us—and the ways music helps us find connection, wherever we may be.
